Chapter 4 - The Brother's Betrayal

Arthur’s blood turned to absolute ice.

Marcus Sterling was Anna’s older stepbrother. And Marcus was currently inside that very church hall, hosting a massive, lavish charity gala in "honor" of his late sister. By tomorrow morning, Marcus was scheduled to officially inherit the entire fifty-million-dollar Sterling estate.

"What did he do to you, Anna?" Arthur asked, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.

"He drugged my tea," Anna sobbed, burying her face into the warmth of Arthur's coat. "When I woke up, I was in the trunk of his car. He drove me to the worst part of the city in the middle of a blizzard. He took my coat. He took my shoes. He threw me out onto the street and told me that if the cold didn't kill me, the gangs would."

Arthur’s jaw locked. The sheer, calculating evil of it was sickening. Marcus hadn't just tried to kill his sister; he had wanted her to suffer, freezing to death in the gutter while he drank champagne in a tuxedo.

For two weeks, Anna had hidden in alleyways, terrified to go to the police because Marcus had half the precinct on his payroll. She had walked miles through the snow to this church, hoping to expose him tonight, but her body had finally given out on the freezing steps.

Emma reached out her tiny, warm hand and gently touched Anna’s frozen cheek.

"Daddy will help you," Emma promised innocently.

Arthur looked at his daughter, then looked deeply into Anna's terrified eyes. The exhaustion in his face vanished, replaced by a cold, cinematic, and lethal determination.
