Chapter 2 - The Secret Life

The mother turned on her heel, preparing to march down the hallway to pick out her favorite son's new master suite.

But before she could take a single step, the heavy oak doors of the grand foyer swung open. The sound of heavy, confident footsteps echoed across the marble floors, accompanied by the bright, happy giggling of children.

Daniel walked into the kitchen. He was a handsome man in his late thirties with short, neatly styled dark hair, wearing a crisp pale blue dress shirt and tailored charcoal trousers. He possessed the intimidating, razor-sharp aura of a high-powered corporate attorney. Under his arm, he carried a thick, heavy black leather folder.

Remaining safely and happily beside him were Lily and Grace—two beautiful young girls wearing delicate pastel dresses, their faces lighting up when they saw Emily.

The mother froze completely.

All the blood violently drained from her carefully made-up face. The smug, entitled smile completely disappeared. She looked at the towering, wealthy man, and then down at the two beautiful children clinging to his legs.

“You have a husband?” the mother gasped, absolute, paralyzing shock rendering her breathless.

Emily didn't move a single inch. She kept her posture perfectly straight, letting the devastating reality of her success crush her mother's arrogant assumptions.

“And two daughters,” Emily answered, her voice ringing clear and steady in the bright kitchen.

The mother stumbled backward, her hand flying to her chest. For seven years, she had convinced herself that Emily was a miserable, lonely failure. She had barged into this mansion fully believing Emily was desperate for family and easily manipulated.
