Chapter 8 - The Detectives

The mother’s head snapped up at the sound of the doorbell. Her eyes were red, swollen, and filled with the sheer terror of a cornered animal.
"Don't answer it!" she shrieked, crawling toward Emily and desperately grabbing the hem of her navy trousers. "Emily, please! Tell them it was a misunderstanding! Tell them you authorized the loans! I am your mother!"
Emily didn't flinch. She gently but firmly kicked her leg back, ripping her trousers from the woman's desperate grasp.
"You lost the right to call yourself my mother seven years ago," Emily stated, completely devoid of empathy.
Daniel walked out of the kitchen and into the grand foyer. The heavy wooden doors opened, and the deep, authoritative voices of law enforcement echoed down the hall.
A moment later, two plainclothes detectives wearing sharp suits and carrying gold badges walked into the sunlit kitchen, followed closely by two uniformed police officers.
"Helen Carter?" the lead detective asked, his eyes locking onto the weeping woman on the floor.
The mother tried to scramble backward, pressing herself against the base of the marble island like a frightened rat. "No! I didn't sign anything! It was Jason! My son did it all! I had no idea what the papers were! I am innocent!"
Emily watched in absolute disgust as the woman who had worshipped Jason her entire life instantly tried to throw her beloved golden boy under the bus the second she was faced with prison time.
The detective pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
