Chapter 5 - The Attorney's Trap

The mother froze, her thumb hovering over the screen of her phone.
"You don't understand!" the mother shrieked, completely losing her carefully styled, high-society facade. "Jason is in trouble! He got in over his head with some bad investments! He just needed a little bridge loan to get his company off the ground! I had to help him!"
"A little bridge loan?" Daniel scoffed, his sharp jaw locking tight. "He took out four mortgages on non-existent properties, maxed out six platinum credit cards, and forged my wife's signature on a half-million-dollar federal business loan. That isn't a mistake, Helen. That is a coordinated, malicious financial crime."
Emily stared at the woman who was supposed to protect her.
"You stole my identity," Emily whispered, the raw, agonizing betrayal finally breaking through her composed exterior. "You abandoned me seven years ago with fifty dollars in my pocket. And the second your golden boy needed bail money, you tried to completely ruin the life I built from scratch."
"You have plenty!" the mother yelled back, gesturing wildly at the grand mansion kitchen, the marble island, and the tall glass windows. "Look at this place! You married a rich lawyer! You live in a palace! Jason has nothing! You owe this to your family!"
"You are not my family," Emily stated coldly, completely severing the toxic bond.
The mother glared at Daniel, her eyes filled with venomous entitlement. "Fine. You want the money back? I'll have Jason set up a payment plan. We will pay you back fifty dollars a month. But you are not going to ruin my son's life over a piece of paper!"
