Chapter 3 - The Black Folder

The tension in the sunlit kitchen was suffocating.
Daniel took one look at the older woman in the beige coat, his eyes turning cold and calculating. He didn't bother offering a handshake or a polite greeting. He gently touched his daughters' shoulders, offering them a warm, reassuring smile.
"Go play, girls," Daniel murmured softly. He gently directed Lily and Grace toward the adjoining playroom visible through the open doorway.
Once the children were safely out of earshot, the terrifying, ruthless corporate attorney fully awakened. Daniel walked directly up to the pristine white marble island and slammed the thick black folder down onto the stone with a heavy, deafening thud.
The mother flinched, clutching her handbag tighter against her floral dress.
Emily stepped forward. Without breaking eye contact with her mother, she reached out and flipped the leather cover open.
Inside was a massive stack of banking documents, heavily highlighted in red ink. Emily slowly turned the top document around so her mother could see it. It was a massive commercial loan application bearing Emily’s full legal name, her social security number, and a wildly unfamiliar, messy signature at the bottom.
“Someone kept using my name,” Emily stated, her voice dangerously calm, holding her mother's panicked gaze.
The older woman began to hyperventilate. Her eyes darted wildly toward the glass windows overlooking the garden, desperately searching for an escape route. The illusion of her being the dominant matriarch was entirely shattered.

"I... I have no idea what that is," the mother stammered, her voice shaking violently. "Identity theft is so common these days, Emily. You should really freeze your credit."
