Chapter 9 - The Final Collapse

"You can't do this to me!" the mother shrieked like a banshee, thrashing and kicking wildly on the hardwood floor. "I am a respectable woman! I go to church! My daughter is lying!"

The two uniformed officers stepped forward. They grabbed the frantic woman by her arms, violently hauling her up from the floor. Her carefully styled blonde-gray hair fell in messy, chaotic strands across her face.

The cold steel cuffs clicked loudly around her wrists, snapping the arrogant woman back into the horrific, undeniable reality of her crimes.

As they dragged her toward the hallway, the mother turned her head, fixing a look of pure, venomous hatred on Emily.

"You are a monster!" the mother screamed, her voice cracking with sheer hysteria. "You are going to burn in hell for sending your own flesh and blood to prison! I curse the day you were born!"

Emily stood her ground. She didn't raise her voice. The cinematic realism of her restraint was infinitely more powerful than the woman's frantic screaming.

"Enjoy your three bedrooms, Helen," Emily replied softly, her dark eyes flashing with absolute, terrifying victory. "I hear the federal penitentiary is lovely this time of year."

The mother let out one final, pathetic wail of despair as the officers dragged her out of the kitchen, down the long hallway, and out the front doors.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut, ending her toxic, abusive reign forever.
