Chapter 6 - The Unstoppable Avalanche

"You fundamentally misunderstand the situation, Helen," Daniel said, closing the heavy black folder with a sharp, echoing snap.
The mother backed away, her floral dress rustling against the marble island. "What do you mean?"
"I am a corporate litigator," Daniel explained smoothly, adjusting his pale blue shirt. "When I discovered the credit alerts on Emily's accounts three weeks ago, I didn't just print out a few bank statements to yell at you. I spent the last twenty-one days meticulously compiling a bulletproof, five-hundred-page forensic financial dossier."
The mother stopped breathing. The air in the bright kitchen turned absolutely suffocating.
"I didn't bring this folder here to negotiate a payment plan," Daniel continued, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "I brought this folder here as a courtesy to my wife, so she could look you in the eye when your entire world collapsed."
"Collapsed?" the mother choked out, a cold sweat breaking across her forehead.
"Forging signatures across state lines on federally backed commercial loans isn't a civil dispute, Helen," Daniel stated, leaning forward. "It is a Class B federal felony. It carries a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in a federal penitentiary."
The mother’s knees completely gave out. She grabbed the edge of the marble island to keep from collapsing onto the hardwood floor.
"No," the mother gasped, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror. "No, you wouldn't do that to your own brother-in-law! He's just a boy!"

"He is a thirty-two-year-old criminal," Emily corrected her mercilessly. "And you are his accomplice."
