Chapter 1 - The Birthday Bill

The private dining room at the Bellweather Hotel was a cinematic masterpiece of untouchable wealth. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow across the candlelit tables, reflecting off elaborate floral arrangements and the expensive jewelry of thirty formally dressed guests.

But at the head of the table, the sophisticated elegance was suffocating.

Evelyn Ashford, a sixty-eight-year-old self-made business owner with elegantly styled silver hair, sat quietly in her navy evening dress. She had just finished opening her birthday gifts. Without a word, the waiter approached and placed a heavy black leather bill folder directly in front of her.

Evelyn slowly opened the folder. Inside was an itemized invoice for the entire luxurious party, alongside a separate credit card authorization form waiting for her signature.

She studied the invoice, her sharp, observant eyes scanning the bottom line. She slowly raised her gaze toward Grant, her arrogant son.

"My birthday gift is an eighteen-thousand-seven-hundred-sixty-dollar bill?" Evelyn asked, her voice quiet but piercing.

Grant, in his early forties, wore a tailored charcoal suit and a wildly expensive luxury wristwatch. He didn't look embarrassed. He rested one hand confidently beside the folder and gave a brief, dismissive laugh.

"Consider it your contribution to the family, Mom," Grant smirked impatiently.

👉 Evelyn kept her face completely neutral, entirely unaware of the massive, apocalyptic betrayal hiding on page two of the invoice.
