Chapter 4 - The Room Service

"I don't think it's a mistake, Grant," Evelyn replied coldly, her eyes flashing with the lethal, undeniable intelligence that had built her massive corporate empire.

She didn't hand him the bill. Instead, she picked up the itemized invoice and read the charges out loud, ensuring the entire dead-silent room could hear every single word.

"Executive Suite 402," Evelyn read smoothly. "Checked in at two o'clock yesterday afternoon. Room service charges include two bottles of Dom Pérignon, chocolate-covered strawberries, and a couple's massage billed directly to this dinner tab."

Sophie physically staggered backward in her chair. The devastating, undeniable reality of the charges hit her with the physical force of a freight train.

"You told me you were at a corporate retreat yesterday, Grant," Sophie choked out, tears of profound, agonizing heartbreak instantly flooding her eyes.

"I was!" Grant shrieked wildly, aggressively pointing a trembling finger at the invoice. "Someone stole my name! It's identity theft! Mom, you are ruining my marriage over a clerical error!"

Evelyn didn't scream. Her quietness was infinitely more terrifying.
