Chapter 2 - The Mother-in-Law's Taunt

The cinematic realism of the heavy, toxic tension paralyzed the head table.

Sitting directly across from Evelyn was Patricia Vale, Grant's mother-in-law. Patricia was a woman in her early sixties with heavily styled blonde hair, draped in a champagne-colored evening gown and dripping with aggressive diamond jewelry. She loved spending money, especially when it wasn't hers.

Patricia raised her crystal champagne glass toward Evelyn, flashing a highly satisfied, condescending smile.

"You can afford it, Evelyn," Patricia purred toxically, ensuring the surrounding guests could hear. "After all, you've always been so deeply focused on your little business. It's the least you can do for the children who organized this beautiful night for you."

Evelyn didn't react to the venomous insult. She didn't scream or cry.

Sitting right next to Grant was his wife, Sophie. The thirty-something woman with brown hair in a low bun wore a beautiful burgundy dress, but she looked visibly uncomfortable. Sophie kept her eyes locked on her lap, her hands trembling slightly as the massive bill sat on the table.

Evelyn slowly opened her small leather purse. She pulled out her sleek platinum credit card. She was fully prepared to pay for her own birthday dinner to avoid a public scene.
