Chapter 5 - The Name on the File

"Don't call them!" Grant wailed, dropping his sophisticated facade entirely. He lunged across the candlelit table, knocking over his expensive crystal wine glass. Red wine flooded the white tablecloth, violently ruining the pristine elegance of the dinner.
Evelyn easily dodged his frantic grab, pressing the speakerphone button on her device.
The entire dining room held its breath.
"Bellweather Hotel front desk, how may I assist you?" a crisp voice echoed through the speaker.
"This is Evelyn Ashford," she stated clinically. "I am currently paying the bill for the private dining room. There is an executive suite attached to this invoice. Could you verify the name of the guest occupying Suite 402?"
"One moment, Mrs. Ashford," the concierge replied politely.
Grant dropped his head into his hands, completely paralyzing the table with his guilt. Patricia, the arrogant mother-in-law, stared at him in sheer, unadulterated horror.
"Yes, Mrs. Ashford," the voice returned on the speaker. "Suite 402 was booked under the name Grant Ashford. The secondary guest registered in the room is a Miss Chloe Vance."
Sophie let out a horrific, high-pitched gasp of pure terror.
