Chapter 1 - IT’S ALREADY TOO LATE

The departure terminal was flooded with daylight.

Travelers moved beneath enormous flight displays. Suitcase wheels clicked over polished tile. Boarding announcements echoed above the crowd in calm, mechanical voices.

Emma Whitmore stood behind a concrete pillar near Gate 42.

She wore a denim jacket over a black dress and held her phone at chest level.

The camera was already recording.

Across the terminal, Julian Whitmore stood beside a leather briefcase and a silver rolling suitcase.

He was supposed to be in Chicago.

He had told Emma he was attending a two-day investor conference.

Instead, he was kissing Olivia Grant beneath a departure screen showing a flight to Geneva.

Not a brief kiss.

Not a mistake.

Julian held the back of Olivia’s neck as if no one else existed.

Olivia wore a burgundy dress and one hand rested possessively on his chest.

Emma had imagined this moment for three weeks.

In every version, she cried.

She shouted.

She demanded an explanation.

But when it finally happened, she felt only stillness.

She stepped out from behind the pillar.

Olivia saw her first.

Her eyes widened.

Julian turned too late.

Emma crossed the distance and slapped Olivia once across the face.

“Enough.”

The terminal fell quiet around them.

Julian lunged forward and grabbed Emma’s wrist.

“Have you lost your mind?!”

Emma twisted free.

Then she drove one powerful defensive punch into his chest.

Julian stumbled backward, lost his balance, and crashed onto the airport floor.

Nearby passengers gasped.

His leather briefcase tipped over.

A passport slid halfway from an outer pocket.

Olivia rushed toward him.

“Turn that off!”

Emma raised her phone higher.

“It’s already too late.”

Julian pushed himself upright and reached for the briefcase.

Three airport police officers rushed toward them.

Olivia gripped his arm.

Julian slowly backed away.

The lead officer stopped directly in front of him.

“Sir... stay where you are.”

Julian’s face drained of color.

Not because of the fight.

Because one of the officers was holding a printed photograph.

The photograph showed Julian entering the terminal earlier that morning.

Beside him was Olivia.

Between them was a man carrying a black document case.

The man had disappeared through a restricted security door twenty minutes later.

Emma had never seen him before.

May you like

Julian had.

And judging by his expression, he knew exactly why the police were looking for him.
