Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL
The trial lasted eleven weeks.
Prosecutors began at the airport.
The kiss.
The slap.
The grab.
The punch.
The passport.
Then they moved backward.
The property deeds.
The synthetic voice profile.
The hidden cameras.
The guardianship papers.
The offshore accounts.
The second identity.
The staged death.
Olivia testified for three days.
Reeves testified for four.
Emma testified for six hours.
Julian’s attorney asked why she struck Olivia.
“Because she reached toward me after I confronted them.”
“Were you angry?”
“Yes.”
“Jealous?”
“Yes.”
“Humiliated?”
“Yes.”
“Then your actions were emotional.”
“My actions at the airport were emotional. The bank records are not.”
The answer ended the line of attack.
The defense played Julian’s public statement about Emma’s mental health.
Then prosecutors played the raw recordings used to manufacture her voice.
Jurors heard the separate words.
The editing.
The artificial sentence.
Julian watched his own system dismantle him.
Richard Whitmore was tried separately.
But his recorded calls were admitted.
In one, he told Julian:
Do not marry the money. Marry the person who cannot imagine you came for it.
Emma did not cry when she heard that.
She had already grieved the marriage.
The jury convicted Julian of wire fraud, identity theft, conspiracy, attempted financial exploitation, evidence fabrication, unlawful surveillance, passport fraud, obstruction, and racketeering.
He was also convicted of conspiracy related to Samuel Price’s death after new evidence proved Richard ordered the crash and Julian later concealed it.
Julian received sixty-two years.
At sentencing, he looked at Emma.
“You would have had nothing without me.”
