Chapter 6 - THE MAN WITH THE BLACK CASE
The man carrying the black document case in the airport photograph was identified as Daniel Reeves.
He had entered the restricted corridor using a contractor badge.
Security footage showed him meeting Julian in a service stairwell.
The camera had no audio.
But Julian took the black case.
Reeves left with the leather briefcase.
At the terminal, the briefcases were exchanged again.
The one that fell during the confrontation contained the second passport.
The black case was missing.
Airport police searched every service area.
They found it behind a maintenance panel near Gate 42.
Inside were original property deeds, encrypted drives, and a handwritten ledger.
The ledger listed payments to Olivia.
Dr. Lang.
Emma’s cousin.
Passport officials.
Bank employees.
And one name Emma recognized immediately.
Richard Whitmore.
Julian’s father.
Richard had died five years earlier.
Or so everyone believed.
The death certificate came from a private clinic in Belize.
No body returned to the United States.
The ledger showed payments to a man using Richard’s old corporate code after his supposed death.
Federal agents reopened the file.
Richard Whitmore had built his fortune through shell companies and stolen pension funds.
When regulators approached, he staged his death and disappeared.
Julian inherited the network.
Emma’s father, Samuel Price, had unknowingly invested in one of Richard’s companies years earlier.
When Samuel discovered irregularities, he withdrew and threatened to report them.
He died in a car crash six months later.
The crash had been ruled accidental.
Julian met Emma at the funeral.
He presented himself as the son of her father’s former business partner.
He comforted her.
He helped manage the estate.
He married her eighteen months later.
Emma realized the marriage had not begun with love.
