Chapter 13 - RACHEL STONE’S SILENCE

Emma called Rachel six times.

No answer.

Elise contacted U.S. authorities.

Rachel had boarded a flight from New York to Paris but never arrived at the connecting gate.

Her suitcase continued to Geneva without her.

Airport cameras showed her leaving the Paris terminal beside a man wearing a diplomatic-service pin.

The pin belonged to the International Asset Recovery Commission.

A legitimate organization.

The man was not an employee.

His face matched an identity found in Richard’s old ledger.

Thomas Bell.

Former Treasury investigator.

Officially dead for seven years.

Emma recognized the pattern immediately.

Dead identity.

Real document.

Institutional access.

A person who could move through systems because the systems believed paper first.

Rachel had spent six years helping Emma build the Digital Abuse Center.

She knew every recovered account.

Every witness.

Every vulnerability.

If she had been taken, the network had access to more than one woman.

If she had gone willingly, the betrayal was deeper.

Emma wanted to return to the United States.

Elise refused to let her travel until the threat was assessed.

Reeves offered another possibility.

“Rachel may be working with them.”

Emma turned on him.

“You do not get to accuse people after using me as bait.”

“I’m not accusing. I’m telling you Richard kept lawyers close.”

“Rachel represented me before she knew about the archive.”

“Exactly.”

The word landed.

Rachel entered Emma’s life after Julian’s public statement, before the second identity, before Richard’s survival was known.

She advised silence.

Protected evidence.

Won every critical motion.

She also gained access to everything.

Emma remembered one moment during trial preparation.

Rachel had asked for Samuel’s original will.

She claimed the conservation restriction might clarify motive.

Emma provided it.

If the access key was hidden in the trust language, Rachel had seen it.

That did not prove guilt.

It proved opportunity.

Elise arranged a secure call with Detective Marissa Cole.

Cole appeared on screen from Washington.

Emma studied her face.

“Did you know Rachel was traveling?”

“Yes. She was supposed to join the conference panel.”

“Did you know Reeves left protection?”

“Not until yesterday.”

“Do you have a leak?”

Cole hesitated.

“We have indicators.”

“Who?”

“I can’t discuss names over this line.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“Then we are already back where Julian wanted me. Everyone knows more than I do, and everyone says secrecy protects me.”

Cole absorbed the accusation.

“You’re right.”

Then she did something Emma did not expect.

She turned away from the official camera and held up a handwritten note.

DO NOT TRUST THIS CONNECTION.

Emma said nothing.

Cole continued speaking aloud about routine procedures while writing another message.

RACHEL CONTACTED ME THREE DAYS AGO. SHE SAID THE CENTER HAS BEEN COMPROMISED.

Then:

SHE BELIEVES OLIVIA IS TRYING TO WARN YOU.

Emma looked at Elise.

Elise understood from her expression but did not interrupt.

Cole’s final note read:

THE LEAK IS NOT ONE PERSON. IT IS A SYSTEM CALLED JANUS.

The screen suddenly froze.

Cole’s audio distorted.

Then a synthetic version of Emma’s own voice came through the speakers.

“Proceed with the transfer.”

The same phrase Julian had built from stolen recordings.

The call ended.

Seconds later, every secure terminal in the room displayed one image.

Emma standing at Gate 42.

The airport video.

Then text appeared.
