Chapter 15 - THE LAWYER WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
Rachel Stone first found the ring inside Samuel’s estate file.
It was attached to a sealed memorandum marked for counsel only.
Samuel instructed the estate attorney to transfer it to Emma only if the conservation restriction was challenged through a foreign entity.
That condition occurred when Julian sold the shoreline to Richard’s company.
But the original estate attorney had died.
Rachel inherited the file during litigation.
She recognized the ring as a key.
She did not give it to Emma.
That omission could be called betrayal.
Rachel called it protection.
In the video, Thomas Bell ordered Emma to travel to the warehouse alone with Reeves’s drive.
Elise muted the connection.
“We will not comply directly.”
Emma watched Rachel in the frame.
Rachel pressed her thumb against the ring three times.
A pattern.
At trial, Rachel used the same movement to signal Emma not to answer a question.
Three taps meant:
WAIT.
Emma returned to the call.
“I need proof she’s not cooperating with you.”
Bell smiled.
“You still think in betrayal. That makes you predictable.”
Rachel suddenly spoke.
“Emma, court evidence lasts longer than public outrage.”
Bell struck her.
The phrase was not nostalgia.
It was instruction.
Evidence.
Rachel wanted the exchange recorded.
Olivia moved closer to the camera.
Her hand disappeared below frame.
Then the image flickered.
For one second, a second room appeared in the reflection of a metal cabinet.
Industrial windows.
Yellow cargo cranes.
A river beyond glass.
Elise froze the frame.
The warehouse was not outside Geneva.
It was in Basel near the Rhine freight terminal.
The Geneva location was another false route.
Elise coordinated a Swiss tactical operation.
Emma remained in the secured office.
Reeves protested.
“Bell will move them if she doesn’t leave.”
Emma turned.
“He expects me to run. I’m done proving fear by following instructions.”
Instead, she recorded a response.
She held Samuel’s drive.
“I will exchange this for Rachel and Olivia. Midnight. Geneva warehouse.”
The message was intentionally false.
Swiss authorities leaked travel records showing Emma leaving the city.
A decoy convoy moved toward Geneva.
Bell’s network followed.
The Basel site lost part of its surveillance support.
At 11:43 p.m., tactical teams entered the freight terminal.
They found Olivia.
Not Rachel.
Olivia had freed one hand and stabbed Bell with the metal clip from her prison-issued identity card.
Bell escaped with Rachel and the ring.
Olivia was bleeding but conscious.
Her first words to Emma over the secure call were:
“He isn’t taking her to the archive.”
“Where?”
“To the conference.”
Emma looked toward the city.
The opening session began at nine the next morning.
Heads of banks, digital-security companies, prosecutors, and regulators would attend.
Bell did not need to destroy Janus secretly.
