Chapter 20 - OLIVIA’S SECOND SENTENCE

Olivia expected freedom after helping dismantle Janus.
Instead, federal prosecutors charged her with new offenses tied to Vale Meridian Holdings.
Unauthorized financial access.
Witness manipulation.
Conspiracy to lure Emma through the hotel trap.
Her cooperation did not erase those acts.
Emma attended the hearing.
Olivia’s attorney asked Emma to submit a letter supporting leniency.
Emma refused at first.
Then read the full record.
Olivia had risked Rachel’s safety.
Used Emma as bait.
Accessed dormant criminal funds.
She also saved evidence, exposed Bell, and helped prevent the archive purge.
Both mattered.
Emma wrote one page.
OLIVIA GRANT SHOULD BE SENTENCED FOR WHAT SHE DID, NOT FOR WHO SHE ONCE WAS, AND NOT EXCUSED BECAUSE HER LATER ACTIONS HELPED. ACCURATE CONSEQUENCE IS THE ONLY FORM OF JUSTICE THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE A FALSE STORY.
The judge quoted it.
Olivia received four additional years, reduced through cooperation.
Before prison transport, she asked to see Emma.
They met across glass.
Olivia smiled faintly.
“You always know how to make mercy sound like accounting.”
“It is not mercy.”
“No.”
“Do you regret using me?”
“Yes.”
“Would you do it again?”
Olivia thought.
“If Rachel’s life depended on it?”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only honest one.”
Emma accepted the honesty without accepting the choice.
Olivia continued.
“When I met Julian, I thought being chosen by a powerful man proved I was powerful.”
Emma said nothing.
“I helped erase you because I wanted your life without having to admit I admired it.”
“You admired the surface.”
“Yes.”
Olivia looked toward the guard.
“When I get out, I’m done building identities.”
“What will you do?”
“Maybe something ordinary.”
Emma almost smiled.
“Try it.”
Olivia served three years and eight months.
After release, she moved to Vermont.
She worked under another name only in the ordinary legal sense—her birth surname, Grant, remained—but no false documents, no secret companies.
She repaired antique books.
Hands that once moved offshore assets began restoring damaged pages.
She sent Emma one photograph.
A torn ledger repaired without hiding the tear.
Emma kept it.

This time, she replied.
ONE PAGE AT A TIME.
