Chapter 4 - Elena Had Been Made to Feel Guilty for Asking Where the Money Went
Alejandro spent the final year of their marriage telling Elena his business was struggling.
Every dinner conversation eventually became about cash.
Labor costs.
Food costs.
Interest rates.
Construction delays.
He asked Elena to contribute more toward household expenses.
She agreed.
Then he asked her to refinance the apartment she owned before marriage.
She refused.
That started weeks of pressure.
“You don’t believe in me.”
“That has nothing to do with believing in you.”
“We’re married.”
“And the apartment existed before we were.”
“You always keep one foot out the door.”
Elena nearly gave in.
Then she discovered the bracelet.
Alejandro claimed it was business-related.
When she pressed him, he turned the argument around.
“You’re snooping now?”
“You hid jewelry in our safe.”
“You have no idea how high-end hospitality works.”
That sentence stuck with her.
So Elena did what Alejandro underestimated her enough to think she would never do.

She read financial statements.
Loan covenants.
Vendor ledgers.
