People who heard the story later assumed Elena must have lost badly in the divorce because Alejandro kept the restaurant company.
She did not.
The company had far less net value than he claimed publicly.
It carried debt.
Contingent liabilities.
Expansion obligations.
Elena’s lawyer advised her not to fight for ownership just because Alejandro emotionally valued it.
Instead she kept:
Her premarital apartment.
Her investment account.
Her independent architecture practice.
A reasonable equalization payment based on verified marital assets.
No restaurant equity.
Alejandro thought he won.
He told Victoria:
“She walked away from the only thing that matters.”
Elena had actually walked away from the asset carrying the most hidden risk.
