Chapter 1 - The Moment Caleb Opened the Door

Milo Whitmore was twelve months old when Caleb finally saw what had been happening inside his own home.

The baby crawled across the polished oak floor toward a small toy beside the living-room sofa.

Sloane Barrett crossed the room after him.

She did not call his name.

Did not pick him up.

She stepped forward and drove one fast kick into his side.

Milo tumbled sideways onto the soft rug and immediately began screaming.

“STAY RIGHT THERE.”

Rowan Ellis had seen everything.

She rushed across the room, scooped Milo up, and moved him behind her beside the sofa.

“DON’T TOUCH HIM!”

Sloane reached toward him again.

Rowan knocked her hand away and blocked the path.

For one second the two women simply stared at each other.

Then Sloane grabbed Rowan’s wrist.

Rowan tore free.

Her open palm struck once across Sloane’s face.

SLAP.

Sloane staggered against the nearby side table, caught its edge, and slowly touched her reddening cheek.

Rowan stayed between her and Milo.

That should have ended it.

Instead Sloane’s eyes moved to the decorative flower vase beside her hand.

Her shock became rage.

She grabbed it.

“YOU’RE GOING TO REGRET THIS!”

Rowan saw the movement.

Too late.

Sloane swung.

The vase struck Rowan across the head.

Rowan cried out and stumbled sideways into the sofa, one hand instinctively covering her head while her body still blocked Sloane from reaching Milo.

The vase dropped onto the carpet.

Milo screamed.

Then the front door opened.

Caleb stood in the entryway.

He saw Milo crying behind Rowan.

Rowan staggering beside the sofa.

The vase on the floor.

And Sloane standing directly in front of them.

Sloane turned.

The rage disappeared from her face instantly.

Caleb looked at his son.

Then Rowan.

Then Sloane.

His jaw tightened.

He did not move toward her.

He did not speak.

But Sloane knew immediately that something had changed.

Because high above the doorway—

May you like

the security camera was still pointed directly into the room.
