Chapter 4 - Rowan Had Been Milo’s Caregiver Longer Than Sloane Had Been in the House
Rowan started working for Caleb when Milo was four months old.
Caleb was running a commercial construction company and frequently worked twelve-hour days. He needed somebody dependable, patient, and comfortable caring for an infant.
Rowan became that person.
She learned Milo’s sleep schedule.
The foods he tolerated.
The song that calmed him during teething.
The specific way he rubbed his left ear when tired.
Caleb trusted her because she never pretended caring for a baby was effortless.
If Milo had a bad day, she said so.
If Caleb made a parenting decision she disagreed with, she told him respectfully.
Then Sloane entered the household.
At first, she liked Rowan.
Or appeared to.
Sloane had been dating Caleb for nearly a year when she began spending several nights a week at the house.
Three months later, Caleb proposed.
That was when the relationship changed.
Sloane started questioning why Rowan knew so much about Milo.
“She acts like his mother.”
Caleb laughed.
“She’s his caregiver.”
“She decides everything.”
“She follows the schedule I approved.”
“She knows him better than I do.”
That sentence mattered.
Not because Rowan was competing with Sloane.
Because Sloane thought she was.
The closer the wedding became, the more she wanted the household to look like a family in which she occupied the natural maternal position.
Rowan’s presence reminded her that trust with Milo had to be earned.
Sloane did not want to earn it slowly.
