Chapter 9 - Sloane Disabled the Camera Because She Planned to Force Rowan Out That Afternoon
The security log led to Sloane’s phone.
Her messages filled in the missing twenty-six minutes.
At 3:58 p.m., she texted a friend:
I’m ending this nanny problem today.
At 4:07:
If she challenges me again, Caleb will finally see what she’s really like.
At 4:11, Sloane disabled cloud recording.
At 4:18, she entered the living room where Rowan was playing with Milo.
Sloane told Rowan:
“You’re done after today.”
Rowan asked:
“Did Caleb tell you that?”
“He doesn’t need to.”
That confrontation was not fully captured because Rowan moved briefly outside the camera’s audio range.
But Rowan remembered the rest.
Sloane ordered her to leave Milo and pack her belongings.
Rowan refused.
“I’m not leaving a twelve-month-old alone with someone who is this angry.”
Sloane responded:
“You see? You think you’re his mother.”
Then Milo began crawling toward the toy beside the sofa.
Rowan turned toward him.
Sloane did too.
The child moved away from Sloane and toward the area nearest Rowan.
It was a tiny action.
Meaningless to Milo.
To Sloane, it represented everything she had been raging about.
She crossed the room.
And kicked him.
Her elaborate campaign to portray Rowan as dangerous ended because for three seconds—
