Chapter 2 - Sloane Tried to Explain Before Caleb Asked a Question
“Caleb, it isn’t what it looks like.”
Those were Sloane’s first words after the scene ended.
Caleb ignored her.
He crossed the living room and went directly to Milo.
Rowan was still holding the child behind her despite being visibly unsteady.
“Give him to me,” Caleb said gently.
Rowan hesitated.
Not because she wanted to keep Milo from his father.
Because she was trying to determine whether Caleb had seen enough to understand what had happened.
Then she handed him over.
Milo wrapped both arms around Caleb’s neck and buried his face against his shoulder.
Caleb felt him shaking.
His own expression changed.
He looked at Rowan.
“What happened?”
Sloane answered instead.
“She attacked me.”
Caleb turned toward her.
“I asked Rowan.”
Sloane stopped.
It was a small moment.
But Rowan noticed.
For months, Sloane had been the person who explained every household incident before anybody else could speak.
Caleb looked back at Rowan.
She touched the side of her head.
“Sloane kicked Milo.”
Sloane immediately snapped:
“That is not what happened.”
Rowan continued.
“I picked him up. She came after him again. I stopped her. She grabbed me. I slapped her.”
Caleb’s eyes went to the vase.
“And that?”
“She hit me with it.”
Sloane stepped forward.
“She’s twisting everything because she hates me.”
Caleb looked toward the camera above the doorway.
Sloane followed his eyes.
For half a second—
real fear crossed her face.
That was the first thing Caleb saw that made him more suspicious than angry.
Because an innocent person normally wanted the camera checked.
