Chapter 10 - Sloane’s Story Collapsed Because She Had Always Controlled the Beginning of Every Clip
Once Caleb knew what to look for, he reviewed weeks of home-security footage.
The pattern became undeniable.
Sloane’s messages often contained videos lasting fifteen to thirty seconds.
The house cameras contained the minutes before them.
One of her clips showed Milo crying while Rowan carried him.
The full recording showed Sloane taking a toy away first.
Another showed Rowan sounding frustrated during dinner.
The preceding footage showed Sloane repeatedly interrupting the feeding routine and criticizing Rowan while Milo became increasingly upset.
Another showed Milo crawling rapidly toward Rowan as though frightened.
Sloane captioned it:
See how Rowan trains him to run from me?
The full footage showed Sloane had just raised her voice after he knocked over a plastic cup.
None of the longer footage made Rowan perfect.
She sometimes sounded tired.
Once she sighed sharply.
Another time she told Sloane:
“You are making this harder than it needs to be.”
But imperfection was not abuse.
Context changed everything.
Sloane had depended on Caleb never checking it.
He had been too busy.
Too trusting.
And too eager for household conflict to have a simple explanation.
Rowan became that explanation.
