Chapter 12 - Caleb Ended the Engagement Without Turning It Into Revenge

Sloane tried repeatedly to speak to Caleb.

He refused private meetings.

Their remaining conversations went through attorneys.

The engagement ended immediately.

Sloane moved out under supervised arrangements for collecting her property.

Caleb did not destroy her belongings.

Did not threaten her.

Did not use his size or anger against her.

That mattered.

He had watched the camera footage enough times to understand how quickly a frightened child could become trapped between adults who believed their anger made them righteous.

The criminal investigation focused primarily on Sloane’s assault on Milo and the vase attack on Rowan.

The security tampering and messages established context.

The case moved through ordinary legal channels.

No instant prison sentence.

No dramatic loss of every dollar she owned.

Caleb did not need fantasy justice.

He needed distance.

Documented boundaries.

And assurance that Sloane would not be around Milo.

The protection order gave him that while the case proceeded.

For the first time since Sloane entered the household—

Milo’s safety did not depend on whether Caleb correctly interpreted her behavior.

The boundary existed outside his judgment.

That humbled him.
