Chapter 8 - Rowan Had Tried to Warn Caleb Directly
Three days before the attack, Rowan asked Caleb for ten minutes alone.
Sloane was upstairs.
Milo was asleep.
Rowan said:
“I’m concerned about how Sloane handles him when she’s angry.”
Caleb’s face hardened immediately.
“What does that mean?”
“She gets frustrated when he won’t go to her.”
“That’s not abuse.”
“I didn’t say it was.”
“You’re implying something.”
“I’m telling you I don’t think she should be alone with him when she’s upset.”
Caleb remembered exactly what he said next.
“You two need to stop making me referee this house.”
Rowan went silent.
He continued:
“Sloane is going to be my wife. You need to respect that.”
“I do.”
“Then stop treating her like a threat.”
Rowan left the room.
She almost resigned that night.
Instead she stayed because Milo was still there.
That decision became the reason she was present three days later when Sloane kicked him.
When Caleb learned this, his guilt changed shape.
He had spent days thinking:
How could I not know?
Now he understood.
He had been told.
