Chapter 13 - Rowan Did Not Immediately Come Back
Caleb assumed Rowan would return once she recovered.
She didn’t.
He visited her apartment with permission several weeks later.
“I need to apologize.”
Rowan let him speak.
“You warned me.”
“Yes.”
“I dismissed you.”
“Yes.”
“I started looking for your replacement because I believed Sloane’s version.”
Rowan said nothing.
Caleb continued.
“If you hadn’t stayed, she would have been alone with Milo that afternoon.”
That was true.
But Rowan shook her head.
“Don’t turn me staying into something noble.”
He frowned.
“I stayed because I was scared to leave him. That isn’t a healthy job anymore.”
Caleb understood.
“You don’t have to come back.”
“I know.”
“I’ll pay everything I owe you. Medical expenses too.”
“I know.”
Then Rowan finally looked directly at him.
“You need to learn who your son is when nobody else is explaining him to you.”
That sentence stayed with Caleb.
For most of Milo’s life, somebody had interpreted him.
First Rowan.
Then increasingly Sloane.
Caleb loved his son deeply.
But love did not automatically mean attention.
He decided Rowan was right.
