Chapter 1 - The Plate Bianca Ground Into the Floor

Noah Bellacorte had become afraid of asking for food.

That was the first truth Rocco did not yet know when he walked through the rear hallway of his mansion that afternoon.

The kitchen looked immaculate.

Bright daylight flooded through the windows. White cabinetry reflected against polished floors. A stainless-steel refrigerator gleamed beside the marble-topped island, and the breakfast counter had been cleared until there was barely a crumb visible.

The only thing that did not belong in the perfect room was Rocco’s three-year-old son.

Noah wore torn, filthy clothes.

His shirt was too old.

His trousers were stained.

His little face looked tired.

And he was hungry.

He moved toward the kitchen counter quietly, watching the hallway as though taking food inside his own home required stealth.

A small plate sat near the edge.

Bread.

A little chicken.

Fruit.

Noah stretched up, took it with both hands, and started to turn away.

Bianca Hayes saw him.

Her face hardened.

She crossed the kitchen immediately.

Noah froze.

“I was hungry…”

Bianca struck the plate from his hands.

CRASH.

Ceramic shattered against the polished floor.

Food scattered everywhere.

Noah jumped.

Then Bianca stepped directly onto the food.

Her champagne-colored loungewear dress barely moved as she ground bread and chicken beneath the heel of her shoe.

“THIEVES DON’T GET TO EAT.”

Noah stared at what had been his lunch.

His eyes filled instantly.

Bianca grabbed his arm.

Forced him down onto his knees beside the mess.

Then pointed toward the food smeared across the floor.

“EAT IT.”

Noah sobbed.

“I’m hungry…”

He did not touch the food.

He only cried.

Then the rear hallway door opened.

Rocco Bellacorte entered.

Salt-and-pepper hair.

White shirt.

Black trousers.

He stopped.

For several seconds his mind refused to assemble what his eyes were seeing.

Noah.

Kneeling.

Filthy clothes.

Ruined food.

Bianca standing over him.

Evelyn, the fifty-five-year-old housekeeper, frozen several feet away with horror written across her face.

Then Rocco saw Noah’s hands trembling.

His confusion became shock.

“Noah?”

The little boy turned.

“Daddy!”

Rocco moved immediately.

He crossed the kitchen, pulled Noah safely to his feet, and brought him behind his body.

Noah wrapped both arms around his father’s leg.

Then clung tighter and began sobbing uncontrollably.

Rocco looked at Bianca.

“What did you do to my son?”

Bianca went pale.

“Rocco, I can explain—”

She stepped toward him.

Rocco reacted instantly.

One open-handed slap struck across Bianca’s face.

SLAP.

She reeled sideways and hit the stainless-steel refrigerator.

No second slap followed.

Rocco remained planted in front of Noah.

His voice dropped.

“THE WEDDING IS OFF.”

Bianca stared at him.

Shock turned to rage.

Then her eyes moved toward the breakfast counter.

A wooden baseball bat rested beside a basket of sports equipment that had been brought in from the garage earlier.

Bianca grabbed it.

Raised it high.

Evelyn gasped.

Rocco pulled Noah farther behind him.

And the scene cut there—

with Bianca holding the bat,

Rocco shielding his hungry son,

and one question suddenly hanging over everything:
