Chapter 11 - Rocco Did Not Turn His Slap Into Heroism
Rocco had slapped Bianca.
Hard.
She stepped toward him after he confronted her, and he reacted with rage.
He did not deny it.
His lawyer asked the obvious question.
“Did she strike you first?”
“No.”
“Was she reaching for Noah?”
“No.”
“What was she doing?”
“Coming toward me.”
“Then why did you slap her?”
Rocco looked down.
“Because I saw my son kneeling beside food she’d ground into the floor.”
“That explains anger.”
“Yes.”
“Does it justify hitting her?”
Rocco paused.
“No.”
That answer mattered.
He had protected Noah when he pulled him away.
The slap afterward was retaliation.
Bianca’s conduct was cruel.
That did not make Rocco’s every reaction automatically righteous.
When Bianca grabbed the baseball bat, the danger changed again, and Rocco removed it without striking her.
He later told Evelyn:
“I don’t want Noah growing up thinking the strongest person gets to decide when violence is acceptable.”
Evelyn nodded.
“That means you have to show him what accountability looks like too.”
