Chapter 4 - The Folder Was Labeled “Household Safety”

Evelyn had photographed the first page because something about it frightened her.
She showed Rocco the image on her phone.
At the top:
HOUSEHOLD SAFETY DOCUMENTATION — BELLACORTE RESIDENCE
Below were dated notes.
Child repeatedly appears in soiled clothing.
Child seeks food without permission.
Child displays compulsive food-taking behavior.
Child demonstrates fear around adult correction.
Rocco read each sentence twice.
They were technically describing things that had happened.
But Bianca had caused them.
She withheld food—
then documented Noah taking food.
She withheld clean clothes—
then documented him appearing neglected.
She frightened him—
then documented fear.
It was an engineered pattern.
Attached to the notes were photographs.
Noah wearing the stained shirt.
Noah standing barefoot near the pantry.
Noah crying beside the refrigerator.
Noah asleep on the sofa clutching a piece of bread.
None showed Bianca.
That was deliberate.
Rocco’s stomach turned.
“She was building evidence.”
Evelyn nodded.
“But evidence of what?”
That question remained unanswered until Rocco’s attorney reviewed the prenuptial agreement.
