Chapter 1 - The Secret Lorenzo Brought Into the Hospital Room

The first sound Sofia Bennett remembered clearly after giving birth was her daughter crying.
Not the soft newborn whimper she had heard against her chest minutes after delivery.
This cry was frightened.
Sharp.
Sudden.
The private postpartum room was flooded with daylight from the large windows. Cream walls surrounded the hospital bed, a padded sofa, a rolling refreshment cart, and the clear newborn bassinet locked securely beside Sofia.
Her daughter lay safely inside it.
Tiny.
Wrapped.
Perfect.
Victor Bennett stood over the bassinet.
Julian’s father had barely looked at Sofia since entering the room. His silver-gray hair was immaculate, his dark suit untouched by the exhausting night the rest of them had endured.
He stared down at his granddaughter with open contempt.
“A GIRL? ALL THIS FOR A GIRL?”
Sofia felt something inside her go cold.
Julian stepped toward the bassinet.
She looked at her husband.
“Julian…”
He kicked the lower frame.
One hard strike.
THUD.
The locked bassinet jolted but stayed upright and stable.
The baby was physically safe.
But the sudden movement terrified her.
She screamed.
Sofia immediately reached toward her.
“PLEASE... GIVE ME MY BABY.”
Her body felt hollow after labor. Every movement hurt. She could barely lift herself from the pillows, but both arms stretched toward her daughter.
Julian turned away from the bassinet.
Toward Sofia.
He knocked her reaching arm aside.
Then slapped her.
SLAP.
Her head snapped against the pillow.
Pain burned across her cheek.
Tears filled her eyes.
Julian looked down at the woman who had given birth to his child less than an hour earlier.
“I’LL LEAVE YOU AND MARRY SOMEONE WHO CAN GIVE ME A SON.”
Sofia stared at him.
She had imagined exhaustion after delivery.
Fear.
Pain.
Maybe even complications.
She had never imagined lying in a hospital bed while her husband punished her because their child was female.
Then the door burst open.
Lorenzo Moretti entered.
Sofia’s father took in the room in one sweep.
His daughter’s reddened cheek.
His granddaughter crying inside the bassinet.
Julian standing over them.
Victor watching.
Lorenzo moved immediately.
Not toward Julian.
Toward the baby.
He carefully lifted his granddaughter from the locked bassinet, cradling her head securely, then placed her into Nurse Claire’s waiting arms.
“Take her to Sofia.”
Claire moved directly to the bed and helped settle the newborn safely against Sofia’s chest.
The baby’s cries softened the moment she felt her mother.
Lorenzo turned.
Julian stepped into his path.
Grabbed the front of Lorenzo’s black shirt.
“She’s my wife. Stay out of this.”
Lorenzo looked down at Julian’s hand.
Slowly removed it.
Julian swung first.
Lorenzo slipped the strike.
Then his right fist drove across Julian’s face.
THUD.
One punch.
Julian flew backward into the rolling refreshment cart.
CRASH.
Water bottles and paper cups scattered across the floor.
Julian collapsed beside the overturned cart.
No second punch followed.
Victor charged.
Lorenzo turned.
One powerful front kick struck Victor squarely in the torso.
THUD.
The older man flew backward onto the padded sofa.
He remained conscious but stunned.
Lorenzo did not advance.
He planted himself between both men and the hospital bed.
Behind him, Sofia clutched her daughter while Nurse Claire supported them both.
Then Lorenzo roared:
“YOU REALLY THOUGHT I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT YOU’VE BEEN DOING?!”
Everything changed.
Victor froze.
Julian looked up from beside the overturned cart.
Their rage disappeared.
Alarm replaced it.
Sofia saw it.
Her father had not simply arrived at the right moment.
He had come to the hospital already knowing something.
Something Julian and Victor were terrified he had discovered.
And suddenly Sofia realized their cruelty over the baby being a girl was not the beginning of the story.
May you like
It was the moment their secret finally cracked open.
