Chapter 3 - Lorenzo Started Asking Questions Before the Birth
Lorenzo had disliked Julian from the beginning.
Not because Julian lacked money.
The Bennetts were wealthy.
Not because Lorenzo was possessive of Sofia.
He had welcomed previous boyfriends.
Julian bothered him because every conversation felt transactional.
He spoke about marriage like a merger.
Children like legacy.
Family like ownership.
Still, Sofia loved him.
So Lorenzo respected her choice.
Until the seventh month of pregnancy.
That was when Sofia called her father after midnight.
She was crying.
Julian had just told her that if the baby “came out wrong,” she should be prepared for consequences.
Lorenzo asked what that meant.
Sofia laughed nervously.
“He’s obsessed with having a boy.”
“Did he threaten you?”
“No.”
But her voice said something else.
The next morning Lorenzo started asking questions.
Not investigating his daughter secretly.
Checking facts she had already shared.
He learned the prenatal blood test had supposedly been processed through Bennett Family Diagnostics, a private medical-services company partly owned by Victor.
That raised his first concern.
Then he asked Sofia to send him a copy of the report.
The laboratory accession number did not match the formatting used by the clinic.
Lorenzo did not tell Sofia immediately.
He did not want to frighten her during the final weeks of pregnancy without evidence.
Instead, he hired an independent medical-records attorney and requested confirmation through proper channels with Sofia’s consent hidden inside a broad records review she had previously authorized him to help organize.
The answer arrived three days before delivery.
No second fetal-sex blood test had ever been performed.
The report Julian showed Sofia was fabricated.
Lorenzo was already on his way to confront them when Sofia went into labor.
He postponed everything.
Then, while she delivered, another document arrived.
