Chapter 12 - Carlo’s Original Letter Finally Surfaced
The missing trust letter was never in the warehouse.
That was why Helena could not find it.
Carlo had sent a duplicate to Marina’s mother.
After Marina’s mother died, her personal papers went into a box stored at Marina’s aunt’s house.
Inside was Carlo’s original letter.
The paper had yellowed slightly.
The language was formal at first.
Then personal.
Mrs. Reed, nothing I establish can restore Thomas to your daughter. This trust should never be described to Marina as generosity. It exists because our company bears responsibility for the conditions surrounding his death, and she should receive its benefit without gratitude being demanded from her.
Marina had to stop reading.
That line undid years of Helena’s language.
Without gratitude being demanded.
Carlo had anticipated exactly the moral danger his wife later created.
The letter continued:
When Marina is old enough, please tell her she owes the Bellini family nothing.
Marina cried then.
Hard.
Not because Carlo’s letter fixed anything.
Because someone inside that family had once understood the difference between help and control.
Her father’s death had not purchased her obedience.
