Chapter 3 - Damiano Had Returned Early Because of One Missing Call

Damiano had not been expected at the warehouse that afternoon.

That mattered.

He was supposed to spend the day meeting lenders two hours away.

Helena knew his schedule.

Marina knew it too.

Then shortly after noon, Damiano received a call from his wife.

Except no one spoke.

The line remained open for six seconds.

He heard movement.

A metal cart scraping concrete.

Then Helena’s voice somewhere farther away:

“Stop sitting down. We are not finished.”

The call ended.

Damiano called Marina back.

No answer.

Called Helena.

No answer.

Called the house.

A staff member told him both women were at the old warehouse.

Damiano canceled the rest of his meetings.

He drove back without telling anyone.

That was why Helena was careless enough to say:

“A proper wife serves your husband’s mother before she rests.”

She thought her son was fifty miles away.

Damiano heard it instead.

Yet even before he arrived, something else had already happened at the warehouse.

His two bodyguards, who normally covered the loading yard during family inventory work, had noticed Helena carrying a suitcase from her car into a locked storage office that morning.

They thought she was storing it temporarily.

Then one guard saw her return to that room twice.

The second time she checked whether anyone was watching.

That was unusual enough that the guard opened the office after she left.

Inside was the fully packed suitcase.

He had not touched its contents.

But he called Damiano’s security chief.

By the time Damiano entered the warehouse, the guards had already been instructed to preserve anything unusual they found.

Not pack it.

Not remove it.

Preserve it.

That explained why the suitcase appeared so quickly after the confrontation.

But it still did not answer the biggest question.

Who had packed it?

The obvious answer was Helena.

And if Helena packed a suitcase before spending hours forcing Marina to search old family storage—

then she expected to leave immediately after finding something.
