Chapter 14 - Marina Went Back To The Warehouse By Choice

Eight months later, Marina returned.
Not because Helena ordered her.
Because she wanted to.
Damiano offered to come.
She said no.
The warehouse looked different.
Same shelving.
Same concrete.
Same utility carts.
But nobody stood behind her telling her to keep working.
Marina walked to the section where the bins had collapsed.
The marks were still faintly visible on one metal shelf.
She found the old Bellini compensation trust boxes now properly cataloged by independent archivists.
Then she found something unexpected.
A personnel file.
THOMAS REED.
Her father.
Inside was a photograph from a company picnic.
He was thirty-four.
Smiling.
Holding a paper cup.
Marina had never seen the picture.
She sat down on a wooden crate and stared at it for a long time.
The warehouse stopped being only the place Helena humiliated her.
It became somewhere her father had once walked.
Worked.
Laughed.
Existed before the accident reduced his story to paperwork.
Marina took a certified copy of the photograph.
Then she closed the file herself.

No one ordered her to carry another box.
