Chapter 5 - Carlo Had Known Marina Before Damiano Did
Marina’s connection to Carlo Bellini went back almost fifteen years.
She simply had not known his name.
When Marina was thirteen, her father, Thomas Reed, died in a warehouse accident.
He had been a maintenance supervisor for a regional distribution company.
That company was partly owned by the Bellini family.
Carlo personally handled the aftermath because the accident exposed serious safety failures under a subcontractor.
He met Marina’s mother.
Paid for funeral expenses.
Established a modest education fund for Marina.
And forced the subcontractor’s insurer into a settlement large enough that Marina’s mother could keep their house.
None of that made Carlo a saint.
The accident occurred inside a business he controlled.
He considered helping the family part of his responsibility.
Years later, he quietly created another arrangement.
A small beneficial interest inside a private Bellini compensation trust reserved for families seriously harmed through historic company failures.
Marina was one beneficiary.
Not because she married Damiano.
Long before that.
She was entitled to periodic payments beginning at age thirty.
Marina had no idea.
Carlo intentionally delayed notification because the funds were meant as long-term security, not childhood compensation.
Then Carlo died.
The trust remained.
Helena became one of the administrative trustees.
