Chapter 9 - Marina Was More Angry About The Years Than The Money

When Damiano finally told Marina about the trust, she said almost nothing.

He expected shock over the amount.

Instead she asked:

“My father died because of their warehouse?”

“Yes.”

“And your father knew?”

“Yes.”

“He helped my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Your mother knew who I was before we ever met?”

Damiano paused.

“Yes.”

That hurt her most.

Every dinner.

Every insult.

Every time Helena called her unsuitable.

Every time she implied Marina married upward for security.

Helena already knew Marina’s family had lost a father inside a Bellini-controlled business.

Knew Carlo had accepted responsibility.

Knew Marina had money legally set aside precisely because of that loss.

And still treated her as if she had arrived asking for charity.

Marina began crying.

Not loudly.

Just exhausted tears.

“She made me feel like I owed her for everything.”

Damiano sat beside her.

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

He looked at her.

“She knew my father died working for your family, and she still made me work in that warehouse while I could barely stand.”

Damiano closed his eyes.

That was the cruelty at the center.

The money mattered.

But humiliation had memory behind it.

Helena had made the daughter of a dead worker serve inside the same family system that had once failed him.

Knowing exactly who she was.
