Chapter 1 - The Christmas Dinner Claire Finally Walked Out Of

Claire Dawson was holding the ladle when Margaret decided five-year-old Lily did not deserve dinner.
The Dawson dining room looked almost offensively beautiful.
Warm chandelier light.
Tall arched windows reflecting the decorated Christmas tree.
A long polished dining table covered in white porcelain, candles, roasted vegetables, bread, meat, and the large white soup tureen Margaret had brought out twenty minutes earlier.
Lily stood beside her mother in a red holiday dress.
She had barely eaten all day.
Claire knew because the child had quietly asked three times when dinner would be ready.
So Claire filled one white bowl with soup.
She had barely lifted it when Margaret snatched it from her hands.
“Margaret—”
Too late.
Her mother-in-law turned and hurled the bowl directly into the nearby cream wall.
CRASH.
Porcelain shattered.
Soup exploded across the wall and ran down toward the floor.
Lily flinched so hard she bumped against Claire’s hip.
Margaret stared at the child.
“SHE DOESN’T NEED IT.”
Claire went still.
“What are you doing?”
Margaret turned toward her.
Then slapped her.
Hard.
SLAP.
Claire’s head snapped sideways.
Lily gasped.
Then began crying.
“Mommy!”
Margaret’s voice stayed cold.
“STOP SPOILING HER.”
Claire slowly turned her face back.
Her cheek burned.
But that was not what hurt most.
She looked toward Daniel.
Her husband remained seated at the table.
Dark-green shirt.
Fork in one hand.
Knife in the other.
He calmly cut another piece of food.
Chewed.
Barely glanced up.
Claire waited.
Surely now.
Surely after watching his mother destroy Lily’s dinner and strike his wife—
Daniel would finally stand.
He didn’t.
Instead he said:
“Mom said enough.”
Three words.
Claire stared at him.
Her disbelief burned away.
Something hotter replaced it.
Margaret stepped toward her again, arrogant enough to believe the room still belonged to her.
Claire moved first.
One powerful front kick struck Margaret in the torso.
THUD.
Margaret flew backward toward the same cream wall.
She landed forward against the soup-smeared area beside the shattered bowl pieces, getting soup across her cheek, hair, and champagne blouse without suffering serious injury.
There was no second kick.
Margaret pushed herself partly upright.
Stunned.
Daniel finally stopped eating.
His fork remained suspended over his plate.
He stared at Claire as if she had suddenly become the problem.
Claire ignored him.
She turned immediately toward Lily.
The little girl was crying, hands trembling beside her red dress.
Claire bent down.
Scooped her safely into her arms.
Lily wrapped both arms around her mother’s neck.
Claire straightened.
Her tears were gone.
She looked at Daniel.
Then Margaret.
“That’s enough.”
Daniel froze.
Margaret stared from the soup-covered floor.
Claire turned toward the doorway with Lily held tightly against her.
And walked.
Neither of them understood yet that Claire was not simply leaving Christmas dinner.
May you like
She was leaving the marriage.
