Chapter 14 - Christmas Returned Before Claire Was Ready

The next December, Claire dreaded Christmas dinner.
Not because Margaret would be there.
She wouldn’t.
Because memory lives in rooms, smells, and food.
Soup especially.
Claire had avoided serving it for almost a year.
Then one afternoon Lily asked:
“Can we make Grandma’s Christmas soup?”
Claire froze.
Lily corrected herself.
“Not Grandma’s. Ours.”
So they did.
Different recipe.
Chicken and rice.
Carrots cut into stars.
Lily stood on a stool beside Claire and stirred carefully with a wooden spoon.
At dinner, Claire filled Lily’s bowl.
No one grabbed it.
No porcelain shattered.
No one commented on portion size.
Lily ate half.
Then pushed the bowl away.
“I’m done.”
Claire smiled.
“Okay.”

That one word meant more than the entire meal.
