Chapter 5 - Daniel Had Chosen His Mother Because He Needed Her Money
The financial truth came next.
Daniel had not merely become passive.
He had become dependent.
His consulting business had been failing for almost a year.
Claire knew revenue was down.
She did not know how bad it was.
Daniel had borrowed $180,000 from Margaret.
Not once.
Across six transfers.
Margaret paid the mortgage twice.
Covered his business payroll.
Paid off one credit card.
And every transfer came with increasing involvement in their household.
At first:
“Let your mother help with Lily.”
Then:
“She should have a key.”
Then:
“She raised me. She knows what she’s doing.”
Then:
“You need to stop fighting with the person keeping this family afloat.”
Claire read the bank statements and understood Daniel’s cowardice differently.
Not better.
Differently.
He had sold authority inside his marriage piece by piece because confronting Margaret might mean losing financial support.
When Claire asked him later why he allowed food to be withheld, Daniel said:
“I didn’t think Mom was actually starving her.”
Claire stared at him.
“You watched her throw Lily’s dinner into a wall.”
“That got out of hand.”
“You said, ‘Mom said enough.’”
Daniel looked away.
