Chapter 8 - Lily Hid Bread Under Her Pillow

Three nights after Christmas, Claire noticed crumbs in Lily’s temporary bedroom.
She pulled back the pillow.
Two dinner rolls were hidden underneath.
Wrapped carefully in a napkin.
Claire sat on the edge of the bed.
“Sweetheart?”
Lily froze.
“You’re not in trouble.”
No response.
“Why is the bread here?”
Lily’s eyes filled.
“For tomorrow.”
“There’ll be breakfast tomorrow.”
“What if Grandma comes?”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“She won’t.”
“What if Daddy says she can?”
“He can’t.”
Lily looked doubtful.
Children trust patterns more than promises.
So Claire did not make a speech.
She brought a small basket.
Crackers.
Granola bars.
Bananas.
She placed it on a low shelf.
“This belongs to you.”
“All of it?”
“Yes.”
“Even if I’m bad?”
Claire knelt.
“Food is not something you lose because someone is angry with you.”
Lily stared at the basket for a long time.
She did not touch it that night.

But she stopped hiding bread beneath her pillow two weeks later.
