Chapter 9 - Claire Had to Own the Kick
Margaret’s behavior did not make Claire’s kick automatically right.
Claire knew that.
Margaret had slapped her.
Then stepped toward her again.
Claire kicked hard enough to send a sixty-four-year-old woman into a wall.
No serious injury resulted.
But Claire did not call it perfect self-defense.
When asked about it during the family-law process, she answered plainly.
“I was angry.”
“Did you believe Margaret was about to hit you again?”
“I didn’t know.”
“Could you have stepped away?”
“Probably.”
“Then why did you kick her?”
Claire looked down.
“Because I had watched her humiliate my hungry daughter and my husband sat there eating.”
It explained the reaction.
It did not erase responsibility.
Claire accepted that distinction.
