Chapter 4 - Margaret Had Created a System

Lily’s pediatric appointment documented what Claire feared.
Mild weight loss.
No acute medical crisis.
No evidence of a disease causing appetite problems.
The doctor asked Lily simple questions.
“Who gives you breakfast?”
“Mommy.”
“What happens when Mommy isn’t home?”
“Grandma says wait.”
“Wait for what?”
“Being good.”
Claire looked away.
The doctor continued gently.
“What does being good mean?”
Lily counted on her fingers.
“No crying. No asking twice. No snacks. Finish cleaning.”
Claire’s jaw tightened.
“Cleaning what?”
“My room. Grandma’s shoes. Toys.”
The doctor stopped.
Not because chores themselves were extraordinary.
Because food had been turned into payment for obedience.
At home, Claire began reconstructing the last two months.
Margaret had started coming over more frequently after Daniel lost a major client.
She offered to “help.”
She handled school pickup.
Afternoons.
Some dinners.
Then she gradually imposed rules.
Food only at designated times.
No snack if Lily cried.
No second serving if she interrupted adults.
No dessert if she asked to call Claire at work.
And eventually—
meals withheld entirely.
Margaret called it discipline.
Daniel called it structure.
May you like
Lily called it hunger.
