Chapter 7 - Evelyn From School Had Kept a Lunch Log

The strongest evidence came from Lily’s kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Alvarez.
For three weeks, she had noticed Lily asking classmates whether they planned to finish their lunches.
Not stealing.
Asking.
Politely.
Then waiting.
Mrs. Alvarez started keeping notes.
Monday:
Lily ate entire lunch rapidly.
Tuesday:
Lunchbox contained only crackers and cucumber.
Wednesday:
No lunch packed.
Thursday:
Lily said Grandma told her breakfast was enough until dinner.
Friday:
Lily asked if classroom snacks had to be earned.
The school had attempted to contact both parents.
Daniel answered first.
He said:
“Her grandmother is handling a temporary behavior issue.”
That sentence became impossible for Claire to forgive.
He knew.
Maybe he never understood the full damage.
May you like
But he knew enough to explain it away.
