Chapter 1 - The Dropped Fork

The modern American kitchen was bathed in bright, beautiful daytime lighting. A heavy wooden dining table was set with plates of spaghetti, waiting for a quiet, casual family lunch. Two adult neighbors—a man in a blue shirt and a woman in a dark shirt—were standing in the background, casually chatting about the neighborhood block party.
Everything felt entirely normal and incredibly peaceful.
Standing near the kitchen island was Chloe, a thirty-something woman wearing a light blue button-down dress with her dark blonde hair pinned in an elegant updo. She was reaching across the counter to grab a napkin.
As she pulled her hand back, she accidentally knocked a heavy metal fork off the edge of the granite counter.
Clang.
The sharp, metallic noise echoed loudly against the tiled floor.
"Oh!" Chloe gasped softly, a completely normal reaction to dropping a utensil.
But the reaction of her ten-year-old niece, Bailey, was absolutely paralyzing.
Bailey, a sweet little girl with long blonde hair and a white dress, was standing three feet away. The second the fork hit the floor, Bailey didn't jump. She didn't look down at the mess.
She instantly, violently dropped to her hands and knees.
