Chapter 5 - The Stolen Identity

Bailey’s tear-filled eyes locked directly onto her aunt.

She was terrified to speak the final words, but the fierce, protective warmth in Chloe’s eyes finally broke through the years of suffocating psychological trauma.

"The other girl," Bailey whispered, the tears spilling over her cheeks. "The girl with the brown hair. Mommy keeps her locked in the room behind the furnace. She makes me bring her food, but I'm not allowed to talk to her."

Chloe stopped breathing. The cinematic realization hit her with the force of a nuclear bomb.

Rachel didn't just have a secret. She had a hostage.

"Bailey, who is the girl?" Chloe choked out, her entire reality violently collapsing.

"I don't know her name," Bailey wept, burying her face back into her knees. "But Mommy makes her write the checks. She has a big stack of checkbooks, and Mommy yells at her until she signs all the papers for the bank."

The two neighbors standing in the background gasped in sheer, unadulterated horror.

Chloe’s brilliant, terrified mind desperately connected the horrific dots. Three years ago, an incredibly wealthy, elderly widow in Rachel's neighborhood had vanished without a trace. The police assumed she had moved into a private care facility overseas.

Rachel had kidnapped the widow's live-in assistant, locking her in the basement and forcing her to forge the missing woman's financial documents, allowing Rachel to silently drain millions of dollars into her own accounts to fund her fake, high-society life.
