Chapter 2 - The Panic Reaction

The cinematic tension in the bright kitchen completely shattered the casual atmosphere.

The two adult neighbors in the background completely froze, their conversation dying instantly. They stared at the wooden table in pure, breathless shock.

A tight, cinematic close-up captured Bailey hiding under the table.

She wasn't just sitting in the shadows. The ten-year-old girl was curled into a tight, incredibly small ball on the floor. She had both of her small hands clamped fiercely over the back of her neck, locking herself into a highly trained, defensive, protective position designed to shield her head from heavy physical blows.

She was trembling uncontrollably, shaking so hard her white dress rustled against the chair legs.

"I'm sorry!" Bailey choked out in a panicked, breathless whisper, completely unaware that she was in a safe house. "I didn't mean to! I'll clean it up! Please don't!"

Chloe stopped breathing. The air in her lungs violently turned to absolute ice.

She had just taken emergency custody of her niece two days ago, while Bailey's mother—Chloe’s older sister, Rachel—was supposedly in the hospital for "exhaustion." Chloe had believed her sister was just struggling with stress.
