Chapter 3 - The Promise

The cinematic realism of the moment was completely breathtaking.
Chloe didn't yell. She didn't panic. The absolute, terrifying restraint she showed was infinitely more powerful than breaking down in tears. She slowly, deliberately lowered herself down onto the tiled floor.
A medium shot captured the exact composition: Bailey was cowering under the wooden table, crying silently into her knees. Chloe knelt gently beside her, keeping her distance, slowly outstretching her hand to comfort the little girl. The dropped metal fork lay harmlessly on the floor between them. The two neighbors watched in the background, completely paralyzed by the horror of the realization.
"I won't tell the secret, I promise!" Bailey wept, completely trapped in her own terrifying flashback, squeezing her eyes shut. "I won't tell anyone about the basement!"
Chloe’s hand froze mid-air. Her strong jaw clenched so hard it looked like it would shatter.
A dark, terrifying, and deeply unsettling realization violently washed over her. Bailey wasn't just abused. Bailey was terrified of severe, life-threatening punishment because she knew something highly illegal.

"Bailey," Chloe whispered, her voice incredibly soft, dropping into a fiercely protective, unbreakable register. "Look at me, sweetheart. You are safe here."
