Chapter 4 - The Phone Call

The cinematic realism of the moment was completely breathtaking.

Evelyn didn't scream. She didn't throw her purse against the wall. The fierce, protective anger hardening her features was infinitely more dangerous than a violent outburst.

She looked down at the smartphone in her hand. Andrea had meticulously crafted two completely different, perfectly believable lies. She told Nathan that Molly was safe at Grandma's house, and she told Grandma that Molly was safely on vacation with them.

Andrea had intentionally abandoned a child just to enjoy a luxury vacation without the "burden" of a stepdaughter.

An extreme, cinematic close-up captured Evelyn’s face. Her strong jaw clenched in cold, unforgiving resolve. She quickly dialed a number on her smartphone and brought it directly to her ear.

Molly watched nervously from the kitchen table as her grandmother waited for the international call to connect, absolutely terrified of her father's reaction.

The phone rang three times before the line finally clicked open.

"Mom?" Nathan’s voice echoed slightly over the speaker, sounding relaxed and completely oblivious to the horror happening in his own home. "Hey, we're just heading down to the beach. Is Molly having fun with you?"

Evelyn felt absolutely zero human empathy for her son's blissful ignorance.

"Nathan," Evelyn stated, her voice cold, authoritative, and dripping with imminent destruction. "We have a serious problem."
