Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Lies

"Don't lie to me, Molly," Evelyn stated, her voice dropping into a steady, fiercely protective register. "Your father's car is gone. The house is freezing. How long have you been here alone?"
A tight, cinematic close-up focused entirely on Molly’s pale face.
The terrified twelve-year-old finally realized that she couldn't hide her stepmother's massive, highly calculated web of lies anymore. The fragile illusion of her perfect family was violently unraveling.
"Three days," Molly choked out, heavy tears finally welling in her eyes.
Evelyn stopped breathing. The air in her lungs violently turned to absolute ice. Three entire days. A child left completely alone in a massive house to feed herself with peanut butter.
"Andrea told Dad I was staying with you," Molly whispered, her chin trembling uncontrollably. "She said she drove me to your house on Tuesday before they went to the airport. But she didn't. She just locked the door and told me not to answer the phone."
Evelyn’s blood completely froze.
Her son, Nathan, traveled constantly for his corporate job. He trusted his new wife implicitly to manage the household and care for Molly. But Andrea was a bitter, deeply toxic narcissist who absolutely despised her stepdaughter.
Evelyn pulled her smartphone out of her pocket.
